Welcome back to the DIY Auto Maintenance Tips series! In this third installment, we’re diving under the hood to tackle one of the most important maintenance tasks—DIY Oil Change and Filter Replacement. Regular oil changes are essential for a healthy engine and optimal performance. Let’s get started!

Why Regular Oil Changes Matter:

Clean oil lubricates your engine’s moving parts, reducing friction and preventing wear. Over time, oil becomes dirty and less effective, potentially leading to engine damage.

Step-by-Step Guide: Performing an Oil Change and Replacing the Oil Filter:

  1. Gather the necessary tools: wrench, oil filter wrench, drain pan, and new oil filter.
  2. Lift the vehicle using a jack and secure it with jack stands.
  3. Locate the oil drain plug beneath the engine and place the drain pan underneath.
  4. Unscrew the drain plug and allow the old oil to drain completely.
  5. Replace the drain plug and remove the old oil filter using the oil filter wrench.
  6. Apply a thin layer of new oil to the rubber gasket of the new oil filter.
  7. Screw on the new oil filter by hand until snug.
  8. Add the recommended amount of new oil through the oil filler cap.

Proper Disposal of Used Oil and Filters:

Used oil and filters must be disposed of properly to protect the environment. Check local regulations for recycling or disposal options in your area.

By mastering the oil change process, you’re ensuring your engine’s longevity and performance. In the next article, we’ll guide you through checking and topping up your vehicle’s coolant, so stay tuned!
